Rio Tinto, parent of Kennecott Utah Copper, said Wednesday it will invest an additional $300 million into the modernization of the Kitimat aluminium smelter in British Columbia.

The company already has allocated $200 million to the project, which is designed to increase yearly production from 250,000 tons to 400,000 tons.

Rio Tinto said the new smelting technology also will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent.
