Posted: 7:41 AM- Questar Gas Co. says a surge in vehicles using compressed natural gas is outpacing its supply of the fuel.

Rob Jibson, president and chief executive officer of Questar Gas, says depleted supplies are resulting in poor compression in the systems, leaving motorists unable to fill their tanks.

Jibson told the Deseret News editorial board that there isn't a good short-term answer to the problem, but the company is looking for a solution.

Twenty-one public stations in Utah handle fueling for 6,000 to 10,000 compressed natural gas vehicles in the state. Those stations got busier this spring as gasoline costs climbed above $3 per gallon. By comparison, a gallon of compressed natural gas ranged from 60 cents to 80 cents. It's now 87 cents.
