Gift cards may be more lucrative than you think.

A Provo company, Seastone LLC, is building a booming business around specialty gift card packaging - the tin boxes, hood ornaments and other wrappings that hold gift cards.

Between 2007 and last year, Seastone's revenue jumped 1,343 percent - enough to rank it No. 183 on Inc. magazine's annual list of the 500 fastest-growing private companies in the United States.

Sales jumped from $1.2 million to $17.1 million during the period, and the 35-employee company doesn't think the growth has run its course.

"Gift cards have taken off very fast but the packaging of these gift cards is still several years behind," Seastone President Eric Child said Tuesday.

Seastone joins 14 other Utah companies on the magazine's elite register. The fastest growing firm is Skullcandy, a Park City-based maker of audio products for cell phones and portable music devices.

Landing at No. 31, Skullcandy's revenues blasted from $855,000 in 2004 to $35.7 million last year, a gain of 4,077 percent. The company aims its products at snowboarders, skateboarders and listeners of hip-hop and indy rock.

The Utah companies are weighted heavily toward technology, either through sales or services. Seven companies are in Utah County. Six are in Salt Lake County. All have sales that grew exponentially during the four years that ended Dec. 31. Like other firms on Inc.'s list, the Utah companies submitted applications to the magazine, hoping to be selected.

"To be honest, we are on pace [this year] to double what we did last year," said Kevin Santiago, CEO and founder of Cymphonix, a Sandy-based maker of software that allows clients to control the level of Internet access their employees have.

Cymphonix, No. 168 on Inc.'s roster, raked in $3 million in revenue last year. That was 1,399 percent higher than in 2004, a year after Santiago founded the company.

Santiago said his 30-employee company's growth is driven by the increase in Internet usage and by the way people use it.

Salt Lake Mailing and Printing Co.'s revenue exploded after the addition of several people to the company, said Chief Financial Officer Paul Naylor.

Sales manager Bert Bailey brought clients with him. Naylor, who also oversees the company's information technology, beefed up the company's computer capabilities. Trent Robertson, the new production manager, boosted printing and mailing volume.

The changes allowed CEO Gary McCarver to back away from overseeing the 48-employee company's daily operations and focus on strategy, with the result that revenue surged 2,639 percent, from $466,000 in 2004 to $12.8 million last year. Salt Lake Mailing was No. 60 on the Inc. list.

"We are a little bit proud," Naylor said.
