Logan • Utah State has hired Mike Canales and Stacy Collins as assistant football coaches.

Canales, a former Aggie quarterback from the 1981-83, is the new tight ends coach. Collins, who has been the head coach at South Dakota School of Mines, was named special teams coordinator.

Scout.com first reported the hirings.

Canales, 56, spent the past six years as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at North Texas State. He served as the Mean Green's interim head coach twice — after Todd Dodge was fired in 2010 and after Dan McCarney was fired last season.

Collins just completed his fifth season at South Dakota School of Mines. Previously, he was an assistant coach at Portland State, Central Washington, Southern Oregon, Idaho State, Western Washington and Western Oregon. He played at Western Oregon from 1993-97.

In addition to Canales and Collins, Utah State head coach Matt Wells has added Matt Ah You, Brad Kragthorpe and Fahu Tahi to his staff as graduate assistants. Tahi will also coach the Aggie running backs, although not as a full-time assistant. —
