It's been a mostly quiet summer on the recruiting trail for Utah, which has made a concerted effort to be more patient in the recruiting process. But at quarterback, the coaching staff was eager to get a commitment before the season begins.

Enter Jason Shelley, http://247sports.com/player/jason-shelley-37668";>a three-star quarterback recruit from Lone Star High in Frisco, Texas.

Shelley tweeted his commitment out Sunday afternoon, giving Utah a QB in their 2017 class. He's nothing if not prolific: Shelley was an all-state honorable mention after throwing for 3,716 yards and 39 touchdowns and rushing for 1,661 yards and 21 touchdowns, http://sportsday.dallasnews.com/high-school/high-schools/2016/07/31/frisco-lone-stars-jason-shelley-one-nations-top-quarterbacks-commits-utah";>according to the Dallas Morning News. Shelley is the third-ranked quarterback in the Dallas-Fort Worth area behind players committed to TCU and Notre Dame.

On Utah's board, he was an early target along with San Clemente HS QB Jack Sears. The Utes let a few other recruits walk hoping Shelley would commit.

At 6-foot and roughly 180 pounds, Shelley lacks conventional size — http://wwhttp//www.sltrib.com/sports/3723273-155/utah-football-tyler-huntley-and-demariw.sltrib.com/sports/3723273-155/utah-football-tyler-huntley-and-demari";>a trait he shares with Utah's 2016 prep quarterback signee Tyler Huntley. But like Huntley, the Utes were focused on how well he could pass the ball, and believe he'll come in ready to make the throws required of a college quarterback. He has an escapability factor that also adds to his versatility, and he can make plays with his feet.

The Utes were also drawn by his penchant for creating team success. Led by Shelley, the Lone Star Rangers were 14-2 in Texas' 5A Division II, finishing runner-up in the state championship.

Shelley's father, also named Jason Shelley, played football at Washington as a receiver before professional stints in NFL Europe, the XFL and the AFL.

The Utes now have five committed players in the 2017 class, and one in the 2018 class. Shelley was not immediately available for comment. This story will be updated.
