Some Utah fans reported being rudely surprised this week to find that the cost of their football season tickets had risen, in their estimation, considerably.

They are pricier, admitted Utah athletic director Chris Hill on Tuesday. Here's some details:

1 • Utah is playing seven home games this year instead of six. That's a 17 percent increase right off the bat.

2 • Utah has — for the second time since 2005, according to Chris Hill — raised the donation requirement for season tickets. The amount varies by area. Specifically, according to associate athletics director Ann Argust: A. End zone sideline seats (purple, on the map) have been made into a donor area, requiring $100 per seat, and B. The upper east 50-yard-line section (E36,rows 22-50) has become a more premium area, with a price increase of 11 percent. Argust said that outside of those areas, the across-the-board donation requirement has increased 1.25 percent. Hill said two factors in the donation increase are an expected $1 million need to provide cost of attendance to all of Utah's student-athletes and an increase in salary for Utah's football coaches. Kyle Whittingham recently signed on for four more years at $11 million, but The Tribune has not yet learned about raises awarded to promoted coaches, or the contracts signed by new hires John Pease and Justin Ena.

3 • The U. has tacked on a $2 per ticket facility fee to fund a new video board and the addition of new restrooms at Rice-Eccles — a stated priority of Hill's.
