I did not expect to like Season 1 of "The Magicians." I hadn't read the books upon which it is based — a series of best-selling novels by Lev Grossman — and the description sort of sounded like a "Harry Potter" tale set in college.

Well, it sort of is. But this is a narrative for adults. And I ended up becoming engrossed in the story.

Season 2 gets off to a very good start (10 p.m. Syfy).

In the aftermath of their clash with The Beast, Quentin and his friends scramble for a new plan, while Julia and The Beast strike a dangerous deal.
