A number of years ago, we had neighbors who went a bit overboard at Christmastime. To be blunt, their house was a nightmarish mish-mash featuring an excessive number of tacky lights and decorations.

It wasn't all bad. It was easy to give people directions to our house. "When you see the house that looks like Las Vegas threw up on it, turn left."

I think of that house when ABC airs "The Great Christmas Light Fight" (7 p.m., Ch. 4). Those houses are, of course, beautifully decorated. Huge amounts of time and money go into creating displays like the ones we'll see in this week's episode — a Disneyland-inspired light show, a tropical North pole, a tree with more lights than the one at Rockefeller Center, and a tribute to 9/11. (Really. Sigh.)

Some of it is heartfelt. Much of it seems like trying to top the neighbors. Or, in the case of the people on this show, trying to top all the neighbors in every neighborhood across the country.

There's a forced feeling of … oh, yeah, the Christmas spirit.

Imagine how much good could be done if all the work and all the money that goes into these displays went toward charities.
