It's not a coincidence that, on Halloween night, we've got two new comedies premiering — one trying to wring laughs out of violently killing demons, the other taking a more subtle rout, albeit one that includes outer-space aliens.

In "Stan Against Evil" (9 and 9:30 p.m., IFC), the new sheriff in a small town discovers the place is just crawling with demons. She turns to the cantankerous former sheriff for help. "Stan" has some great special effects, but it's short on both comedy and horror.

In "People of Earth" (7 and 7:30 p.m., TBS) Wyatt Cynac ("The Daily Show") stars as a journalist who is assigned to write about a support group for people who claim they were kidnapped by aliens. And then he has his own close encounter. It's more subtle than you might expect, and it has possibilities.
