After tonight's episode, we should have a better idea of what "Designated Survivor" (9 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4) will turn out to be.

Will it be a taut drama like the first half of the series premiere, which aired last week? Or will it be a disappointing collection of cliches, like the second half of that series premiere?

According to ABC, "Hours after the attack on the Capitol, President Kirkman steps into his role as commander-in-chief in the midst of chaos and confusion. Facing dangerous adversaries, Kirkman strugles to hold a country together that is on the brink of falling apart."

I can't tell you what direction "Designated Survivor" is headed in because ABC did not make Episode 2 available to critics. I'm hopeful … but not overly optimistic.
