The broadcast networks canceled a whole bunch of shows this week … which isn't exactly Big News.

It's that time of year. ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and The CW will be announcing their fall schedules this coming week, and they've been clearing the decks for new shows.

The alleged "blood bath" — hyperbole if ever there was hyperbole — included a number of cancellations at ABC, which was to be expected. The network replaced its top programmer recently, and the new president of ABC Entertainment, Channing Dungey, was going to make more changes than if her predecessor had remained in place.

CBS has also had a change at the top a few months ago, and new Entertainment division chief Glenn Gellar's promotion may, in part, explain the move of "Supergirl" to The CW.

And not one of the cancellations this week was more than mildly surprising. It's not like any of the networks cancelled a hit show. They don't do that. (Well, rarely.) In every case, the cancellations can easily be attributed to ratings weakness.

And none of the cancellations was more than mildly disappointing. Sure, there are some shows that might still have life in them — like "Agent Carter," "Grandfathered" and maybe "The Muppets" — but shows like "Nashville," "CSI Cyber" and "Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life" clearly deserved to go.

And in the case of "Castle," I'd argue that it's better for the show to go out after eight seasons than go on to an ninth without female lead Stana Katic after it had been announced she was being cut from the cast.

No doubt more shows will get the ax in coming days, but here's a list of cancellations (as of this writing) by network:

ABC • "Agent Carter," "Blood & Oil," "Castle," "The Family," "Galavant," "Of Kings and Prophets," "The Muppets," "Nashville," "Rookie Blue," "Wicked City"

CBS • "Angel From Hell," "CSI Cyber," "Extant," "The Good Wife" (retiring after seven seasons), "Mike & Molly," "Person of Interest" (returns Tuesday), "Under the Dome"

NBC • "Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris," "Heroes Reborn," "The Player," "Truth Be Told"

FOX • "American Idol," "Bordertown," "Cooper Barrett's Guide to Surviving Life," "Grandfathered," "The Grinder," "Minority Report," "Second Chance"

THE CW • "Containment," "Beauty and the Beast"
