In Season 2, I've become a fan of "Gotham" (7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13). This "Batman" prequel of sorts has become compelling viewing, and I'm happy to recommend it to adult viewers.

With an emphasis on adult.

"Gotham" is incredibly violent. Not just violent, but sadistic. Not only are people are shot and stabbed — and worse — but they're tortured.

In the most recent episode, Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) killed and cooked his stepbrother and stepsister. and served them to his stepmother before slashing her to death.

(It's not like they were good people. They did murder his father.)

Kids should not be watching "Gotham." I'm more than a bit troubled that it airs at 7 p.m. in this time zone.

Parents, you've been warned.

In this week's episode, Professor Strange sends the resurrected Galavan to confront Gordon.

Also tonight, right after "Gotham" it's the premiere of "Houdini & Doyle" (8 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13). In this period piece, Sherlock Holmes creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (Stephen Mangan, "Episodes") teams up with Harry Houdini (Michael Weston, "House") to solve crimes in 1901 London.

It looks great, but it's sort of empty. It makes these two into your average TV crime solvers — and feels a little bit like Scooby-Doo.
