If you missed the first couple of episodes of "The Magicians" (10 p.m., Syfy), you might want to go back and check them out. The first episode takes a while to get going, but once it does it's well on its way to be an engaging series that sort of Harry Potter for grown-ups. Twentysomethings, that is.

Based on the novels by Lev Grossman, "The Magicians" follows depressed oddball Quentin Coldwater (Jason Ralph) as he's recruited to attend Brakebills University, a college for the magically inclined in upstate New York. His friend, Julia (Stella Maeve) doesn't get in — and isn't happy about it — but Quentin is admitted to the graduate program and starts to discover there are a lot of magical people with incredible powers.

Quentin and Alica (Olivia Taylor Dudley) tried some magic in the first episode that didn't turn out well. They accidentally unleashed a mysterious beast who does something awful and threatens even more harm in the future.

In tonight's episode, Alice is willing to do anything to find out what happened to her missing brother. Which isn't really a good idea.
