Is there reason for optimism for Utah Jazz fans this season? Can the local NBA team fight its way into the playoffs after missing the postseason for the past three seasons and four of the past five?

(And the one season they did make the playoffs in the past half decade, 2011-2012, Utah was swept in the first round by San Antonio.)

It's only one game, but maybe we'll get some idea of what we can expect from the 2015-16 Jazz when they open the season on the road against the Detroit Pistons (5:30 p.m., ROOT).

"Arrow" (7 p.m., CW/Ch. 30): Laurel deals with the repercussions of taking Sara to Nanda Parbat.

"The Goldbergs" (7:30 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4): Adam chooses to spend Halloween night with Dana rather than Beverly.

"Criminal Minds" (8 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2): The team investigates when victims' bodies are incorporated into macabre graffiti art in Detroit.

"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (8 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5): Ruzek's career is in jeopardy when an undercover mission doesn't go as planned.

"Nova" (8 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7): Animal mummies recovered from the Egyptian catacombs are examined.

"Supernatural" (8 p.m., CW/Ch. 30): Well, apparently they've tried pretty much everything else in the previous 221 episodes, so this one is told from the point of view of Sam and Dean's car — the black, 1967 Chevy Impala known as Baby.

"Black-ish" (8:30 p.m., ABC/Ch. 4): Dre's cousin who used to torment him makes a surprise visit.

"Code Black" (9 p.m., CBS/Ch. 2): Neal clashes with his father about how to treat his gravely ill mother.

"Nashville" (9 p.m., NBC/Ch. 4): Juliette brawls with a fan and the altercation goes viral.

"The Brain with Dr. David Eagleman" (9 p.m., PBS/Ch. 7): Examining the unconscious brain, which controls movement and plays a major role in decisions and behavior.

"South Park" (11 p.m., Comedy Cental): Cartman learns he has a secret admirer.

"American Horror Story: Hotel" (11 p.m., FX): John gets invited to a Devil's Night Soiree and Alex tries to diagnose Holden's odd condition.

"Moonbeam City" (11:30 p.m., Comedy Central): Dazzle IS smitten with Pizzaz's estranged sister.
