On Saturday (8 p.m., KMYU), Real Salt Lake hosts New York City FC — the first time the Major League Soccer expansion team has visited Utah.

But it will be a homecoming for current NYCFC/ex-RSL players Ned Grabavoy, Chris Wingert, Sebastian Velasquez and Josh Saunders. And for currents NYCFC/ex-RSL coach Jason Kreis.

In addition to the game itself, it will be interesting to see what kind of reception Kreis gets from RSL fans. There's no denying that he turned the team into a contender and led them to a hugely unexpected MLS Cup championship in 2009.

But when he left Utah at the end of the 2013 season, it wasn't under the most congenial of circumstances. And if we're going to give him credit for that 2009 title, we also have to point out that from 2010-2013 his RSL teams won an enormous number of games and had absolutely nothing to show for it (other than relatively meaningless Rocky Mountain Cups for beating Colorado).

And that lack of success includes bitter losses in the CONCACAF Champions League, U.S. Open Cup and MLS Cup finals.

Whatever reception Kreis gets, one thing is for certain — struggling Real Salt Lake REALLY needs a win on Saturday.
