Quick quiz: Do you know the names any of the three remaining finalists on "American Idol"?

Odd are you don't. Which is why the show isn't going to be with much longer.

The sort of weird thing is that Fox has announced that it will air one final season of "Idol" in early 2016. That's not particularly unusual for a scripted show. We see more of those being given final seasons to wrap up their storylines.

But "American Idol" will have no storylines to wrap up. The two final contestants perform tonight (8 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13); we'll find out who wins on Wednesday (7 p.m., Fox/Ch. 13); that will be the end of the current storylines.

Clearly, Fox thinks it can wring some ratings out of "Idol" with that final-season gimmick. Either that or its new-show development was so weak it didn't have anything better to put on next season.

Oh, by the way, the three finalists are Clark Beckham, Jax and Nick Fradiani. And, yes, I had to look that up, because I had no idea.

One of them will be eliminated at the top of tonight's episode; the other two will perform; a winner will be declared on Wednesday

If I were going to vote for a winner tonight — I will not — I would not vote for Jax. Just because using one phony-sounding name is too affected for my taste.
