In the premiere of "The Slap" (7 p.m., NBC/Ch. 5), an adult slaps a wildly misbehaving child, setting off a series of events.

I've seen the first couple of episodes,, and they're interesting. But they're not exactly compelling. This eight-episode miniseries feels like something that might air on a cable network that is less concerned with ratings than NBC is. It's hard to imagine this becoming a success on a broadcast network.
