The creator of "The Walking Dead" has a new series headed for Cinemax, and it will star a Utah native.

The pay-cable channel has picked up a 10-episode season of "Outcast" from creator/writer/executive Robert Kirkman that will be headlined by Patrick Fugit.

Kirkman is adapting his own comic book series, also titled "Outcast," for TV. The series "follows Kyle Barnes (Fugit), a young man who has been plagued by demonic possession all his life. Now, with the help of the Reverend Anderson, a preacher with personal demons of his own, Kyle embarks on a journey to find answers and regain the normal life he lost. But what Kyle discovers could change his fate — and the fate of the world — forever.

Salt Lake City native Fugit, 32, is perhaps best known for starring role in the 2000 film "Almost Famous." He has guest starred in several TV series — including "Touched by an Angel," "ER" and "House" — and has appeared in movies that include "White Oleander," "We Bought a Zoo" and "Gone Girl."

"We are thrilled to be in business with Robert Kirkman, a visionary talent who has the unique ability to tap into today's zeitgeist, making him a perfect fit for the newly expanded Cinemax roster," said Michael Lombardo, president of HBO programming.

(Cinemax is an HBO sister channel.)

Production has been completed on the pilot of "The Outcast"; the series will soon go into production of the remainder of Season 1. No word yet on when it will premiere on Cinemax.
