For sale: A Tudor-style home in Salt Lake City's posh Federal Heights, priced at below $1 million and lovingly owned by a former mayor.

Ralph Becker, who lost his bid for a third mayoral term last November, isn't moving away, his real estate agent says. But not unlike many baby boomers these days, Becker, 64, hopes to downsize and live a little closer to downtown.

So the well-appointed, brick, four-bedroom, 3,909-square-foot home he owns on Federal Way with wife Kate Kopischke is on the market — at an asking price of $875,000.

"It is a fantastic property," said Cody Derrick, agent and owner of cityhomeCOLLECTIVE a real estate and interior design firm in Salt Lake City. Listings in the historic east-side neighborhood are rare, he said, "especially for less than a million dollars."

A resident in the home for seven years, Becker did not return a call Thursday seeking comment.

Along with the trappings of a Federal Heights address — quiet, exclusive, close to the University of Utah and a host of canyon trails — the property boasts some distinctive features.

Built in 1927 and extensively remodeled, the home has 14 rooms including a fully finished basement and attic. The main entertainment space has a barrel vault ceiling and hardwood floors. There are two fireplaces, upstairs and downstairs kitchens and quality finishes like original crown molding and leaded glass windows.

The house also has a steam room and a heated work shed-storage area off the garage, where biking enthusiast Becker keeps his cycling equipment.

The yard — "unbelievably charming," in Derrick's words — is fully landscaped and private. There's even ivy growing on the exterior facade.

The agent calls it "your country home with a city to roam." The property has been listed for about 10 days, he said, and can be viewed by appointment.
