A dark science-fiction romance is teased in today's "Trailer of the Day" for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival ­— which also offers a glimpse of Sundance's big boss man, Robert Redford.

"The Discovery" tells of a romance between two characters, played by Jason Segel and Rooney Mara, in a near-future where the afterlife has been scientifically proven to exist — and that information has led to a rash of suicides. Mara's character is the lover of a man (Jesse Plemons) who committed suicide; Segel is the son of the scientist (played by Redford) who made the breakthrough.

The movie is directed by Charlie McDowell, who also made the romance/sci-fi story "The One I Love" (SFF '14). McDowell is also the son of actors Mary Steenburgen and Malcolm McDowell.

"The Discovery" will debut in the festival's Premieres section, before premiering on Netflix on March 31. It will screen in the festival in the following times and venues:

• Friday, Jan. 20, 9:30 p.m., Eccles Theatre, Park City.

• Saturday, Jan. 21, 8:30 a.m., The MARC, Park City.

• Saturday, Jan. 21, 9 p.m., Sundance Mountain Resort Screening Room.

• Sunday, Jan. 22, 3:15 p.m., The Grand Theatre, Salt Lake City.

• Saturday, Jan. 28, 8:30 p.m., The MARC, Park City.

The 2017 Sundance Film Festival runs Jan. 19-29 in Park City and at venues in Salt Lake City and the Sundance resort in Provo Canyon.
