"Results"

HH

U.S. Dramatic

The "anti-romantic" comedy "Results" throws together three interesting characters in an unevenly paced story. Trevor (Guy Pearce) is an exercise advocate who owns an Austin gym and has ambitions to make it bigger. Kat (Cobie Smulders) is Trevor's best trainer, but she gets hot-tempered when her clients don't do the work. Their relationship, which isn't clearly defined at first, is thrown out of balance by Danny (Kevin Corrigan), a wealthy and pudgy new client who ends up insinuating himself into both their lives. Writer-director Andrew Bujalski ("Computer Chess," a 2013 Sundance title) almost randomly parcels out the information that would explain these characters' jumbled motives, leaving blanks for the audience's imaginations to fill. The cast is engaging enough to let the audience forgive some of the movie's shortcomings, but not all of them.
