One Legend will follow another on the opening night of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.

After the Day One opening film, the musical documentary "What Happened, Miss Simone?," the Eccles Theatre audience Thursday night will be treated to a performance by singer-pianist John Legend.

Legend will perform a selection of Nina Simone's most memorable songs.

"In the '60s, when Nina Simone had her political education, music was inextricably intertwined with the movement for civil rights," the film's director, Liz Garbus, said in a statement. "Today, John Legend is one of the few artists carrying that torch — his passionate commitment to social justice, education and human rights is rare and inspirational. I'm thrilled that Legend will be here to represent Nina's spirit and help carry the message and beauty of her music to a new generation."

Legend paired with the rapper Common to write and perform the song "Glory," for the "Selma" soundtrack. The pair won a Golden Globe for the song, and are nominated for an Academy Award.

"What Happened, Miss Simone?" will debut later this year on Netflix.
