" ... This new research, published Wednesday in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology, looked at both Planned Parenthoods that provide abortions and those that do not. And it found that in either case, living close to one (within a neighborhood of 100,000 people) was associated with fewer female high school dropouts. ..."

Big solar is heading for boom times in the US — David Roberts | Vox

" ... Big solar used to be almost entirely driven by policy, mainly state renewable energy standards and federal tax credits. It has all but outgrown the first and will outgrow the latter over the next five years.

"It's about to stand on its own two feet, outcompeting even rivals that are allowed to dump carbon emissions into the atmosphere for free. It won't be long before the discussion about environmental benefits is moot — utilities will demand solar because it's the cheapest power available. ..."

The Folly of State-Level Tax Cuts — Alana Semuels | The Atlantic

" ... What's happening across the country is that state legislatures have made decisions about taxation that don't jive with the 21st-century economy. They've tried the supply-side model pushed by Reagan economist Arthur Laffer, who said cutting taxes could help spur job growth and spending to such a degree that revenue would not be significantly affected. They've found that this theory has not played out, and that although the recession is over, they're still cash-flow negative. ..."

Voters are doing what politicians won't on marijuana reform — Christopher Ingraham | Wonkblog | The Washington Post

"Massachusetts' top politicians just came out swinging against legal marijuana. ...

" ... They argue that regular marijuana use causes IQ declines (studies say no, it doesn't), that it impairs brain development (latest research says no), and that it negatively impacts graduation rates and career success (not that simple). They argue that a commercial market will lead to more teens using the drug (hasn't happened in Washington and Colorado — yet).

— Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug. Watch why. — German Lopez and Johnny Harris | Vox

"It's a terrifying fact: More than 47,000 people in America died of drug overdoses in 2014 — in what's been widely called an epidemic. But the biggest killer of this epidemic isn't cocaine, meth, or even heroin; it's totally legal opioid painkillers. Here's how it happened: ..."

"Jamie Gilt is a woman who lives in Jacksonville, Florida, and operated a Facebook page called Jamie Gilt for Gun Sense on which she posted liberal-baiting pro-gun memes. (The page is no longer available to the public.) At the top of this post, you can see a photo of Gilt from her Facebook gun page; on her personal Facebook page, there is a picture of Gilt wearing the same shirt, with a child on her lap, holding what appears to be the same gun.

"Yesterday, a woman named Jamie Gilt—and there's only one Jamie Gilt listed in public records as a resident of Florida—was hospitalized after telling police that her 4-year-old son had shot her in the back while she was driving. ..."

"... Study after study has demonstrated that favorites like multivitamins don't actually improve outcomes on a number of health measures, from staving off cognitive decline to preventing cardiovascular disease and cancer. The health benefits of probiotics are wildly exaggerated, and taking antioxidants like beta carotene and vitamin E might even kill you faster. ..."

Of course the Supreme Court is political — Richard A. Posner | The Washington Post

" ... the significance of the Senate's action lies in reminding us that the Supreme Court is not an ordinary court but a political court, or more precisely a politicized court, which is to say a court strongly influenced in making its decisions by the political beliefs of the judges.

"This is not a usurpation of power but an inevitability. ..."
