I was really, really proud of this paragraph in my weekend column:

"And, yes, it's true, if the government pays for those things [contraception, STD testing], that could leave Planned Parenthood and similar organizations more of the money they raise from other sources to fund abortions. Which are legal. And which become illegal in only societies that view women as second-class citizens and declare eminent domain over their reproductive organs."

Except as it first came out — and as it appeared in the print version Sunday — it said, "... and declare imminent domain over their reproductive organs."

Eminent, as in supreme or outstanding, domain, as in territory controlled by someone, the legal term for the right the government has to make you sell them your property, whether you want to or not.

Imminent, as in just about to happen. (Damn spellcheck.) Well, maybe that works, too. If the government is just about to lower the boom on the kind of reproductive rights that the civilized world takes for granted. Of course, most countries where abortion is legal have abortion rates lower than the U.S., because they have real sex education and easy access to health care and contraception.

" ... If you are that concerned about the welfare of children and that profound in your defense of the unborn, you'd darned well better back it up with better assistance for single mothers, better health care coverage for women and children, and, while we're at it, beefed up education funds for our children.
