Late goal from Allen propels RSL to 1-1 preseason draw against Vancouver

A late equalizing goal from Jordan Allen kept Real Salt Lake's 2017 preseason still unblemished.

The RSL midfielder, who entered this preseason as the other incumbent out wide in RSL's 4-3-3 formation, rescued a point for his team by pulling RSL level with the Vancouver Whitecaps Sunday afternoon at Providence Park in Portland, Ore. Allen ran onto a pinpoint cross from forward Joao Plata, trapped the ball with his chest before easily slotting it home.

RSL (2-0-2) and the Whitecaps finished knotted 1-1 in the second match of the preseason tournament in the Rose City. Allen's goal in the 83rd minute negated the 70th minute goal by Vancouver's Yordy Reyna, which gave the Whitecaps a brief second-half lead. Reyna pounced on a poor decision by RSL midfielder Luke Mulholland to play a ball back in hopes of it being cleared.

Instead, the ball found its way to the feet of Reyna, who waved off teammate Alphonso Davies, to unleash a right-footed curling shot inside the box by defender Aaron Maund and beyond the outstretched arms of new RSL goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel.

RSL's starting lineup against the Whitecaps was Nick Rimando, Tony Beltran, David Horst, Chris Schuler, Chris Wingert, Omar Holness, Charlie Adams, Ricardo Velazco, Luis Silva, Andrew Brody and Chad Barrett.

Around the 60th minute, RSL coach Jeff Cassar made wholesale changes.

In came Van Oekel, Demar Phillips, Emilio Orozco, Maund, Lachowecki, Mulholland, Sunday Stephen, Allen, Albert Rusnák, Plata and Yura Movsisyan. RSL captain Kyle Beckerman remains day-to-day while dealing with a bone bruise in his left knee. The 34-year-old midfielder has yet to see time in a preseason match in 2017.

RSL closes out its preseason segment in Portland on Wednesday evening as it faces MLS expansion franchise Minnesota United at 6 p.m. at Providence Park. RSL is expected to return to Utah on Thursday before jetting off to its third and final preseason stop in Southern California on Sunday.
