The roster moves continue for Real Salt Lake.

The club on Thursday announced it traded defender Abdoulie Mansally to the Houston Dynamo in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft. The 27-year-old Gambian international spent the last four seasons at RSL, primarily as a left back along the back line.

General manager Craig Waibel told the Tribune Thursday that re-acquiring Chris Wingert two weeks ago would've reduced Manually's minutes in the RSL defense in 2016.

"We felt like [acquiring Wingert] would limit Abdoulie's time on the field, and at his age and what he's meant to the organization, we didn't think it was fair to knock his playing time down and ask him to be the same type of person on and off the field," Waibel said. "Just looked to get him in a little bit better situation where he's got a better chance to contribute this year."

Mansally joined RSL midseason in 2012 when the franchise acquired him from the New England Revolution. In four seasons at RSL, Mansally was featured in 57 matches across all competitions. In his 49 career league appearances with RSL, Mansally notched one goal and had three assists. A year ago, Mansally made 14 starts at left back, logging 1,310 minutes. The last time he was featured in that many games as a starter was with the Revolution in 2009 when he started 19 games and had 1,699 minutes played.

Mansally was also named RSL's Humanitarian of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2014 and 2015 for his work locally and in The Gambia through his charitable foundation, The Mansally Foundation.

Waibel said Mansally handled the conversations of the trade deal well and holds no malice against the club.

"As everyone would expect, he was a gentleman, he was positive, he's looking forward to the challenge, but obviously he was extremely thankful for the time he had with us and we feel equal in that light," Waibel said. "We'll always have time for him and certainly always answer the phone when he calls."

In a club release from the Dynamo issued Thursday, general manager Matt Jordan said Houston is looking forward to integrating Mansally into the group this preseason.

"The acquisition of Abdoulie strengthens our roster by adding an additional left-sided defender with significant MLS, playoff and CONCACAF Champions League experience," Jordan said in the release.

Waibel confirmed once again Thursday that RSL is in continued discussions with Ghanaian center back trialist Jerry Akaminko. The 27-year-old has been with the team since it arrived in Tucson, Ariz., for this segment of the preseason. But with Akaminko's history of injury, Waibel said the club is being diligent.

"[We're] trying to make sure we're making an extremely-educated decision," he said. "Certainly there's interest on both sides to work this out."

Waibel said ideally a deal could be finalized before the weekend, but said he's in no rush.

"The timeframe is when all the information's gathered and everyone can make the right decision," he said. "Until we have every piece of information that we need, we're not going to jump the gun and try and do anything hastily."
