Craig Waibel has three irons — and they're all a different temperature right now.

On Wednesday evening, Real Salt Lake's general manager said as such in an interview on the club's flagship radio station ESPN700. Waibel confirmed the club is in negotiations with as many as three high-impact players.

"I feel really good and confident about one of them, I'm a little shaky on the other and I'm throwing a penny into the well on the third," he said.

An agreement with the player Waibel feels confident on could be finalized as early as next week, he said. The goal going into this offseason, he added, was to fortify the roster by trying to upgrade at the three identifiable positions, which included center back and target striker.

"We're on the verge of adding two or three more great pieces on the field that I think the fans can really adapt to very quickly and the performances of the players kind of prove themselves, so that's why my phone minutes are running out," he said.

When ESPN700's Bill Riley asked Waibel more specifically if any of the three players targeted are familiar to the RSL fan base — perhaps alluding to former RSL striker Yura Movsisyan — RSL's general manager said, "We're in discussions with some highly-recognizable players with regards to MLS and our particular market and we're also in talks with players that are very dominant in the countries and leagues they play in."

In early December, Waibel told the Tribune RSL remained very interested in bringing Movsisyan, currently at Spartak Moscow in the Russian Premier League, back to MLS. Last month, Waibel said RSL is in negotiations with players from Argentina and Colombia.

Furthermore on the forward front, reports surfaced Wednesday morning linking RSL striker Sebastian Jaime to a move back to Chile. The 28-year-old Argentine was signed by RSL as Designated Player in August 2014 from club Union Española.

The report from Chile, mentioned Universidad Católica as a Chilean club possibly interested in Jaime.

When asked by Riley of the rumors, Waibel said he hadn't read them nor had he received a phone call pertaining to the situation.

"[Jaime] was very successful in Chile prior to coming here, so those rumors are naturally going to exist," he said. "There's always an ounce of truth to everything that we hear, so maybe I will be getting a phone call here in the next couple of days, so we'll see where all those conversations take us. But, as of now, no contact."

Jaime scored five goals and had two assists in 20 league matches in 2015 after a slow start to his RSL career. When asked by Riley if Jaime is part of RSL's long-term plan, Waibel said he must remain open to all possibilities.

"I need to be open to the fact that [Jaime] needs to be happy where he is to perform at his highest level and he has to fit the style of play," he said. "Last year, we didn't quite get there in terms of meshing completely. He had some very good games for us and scored some very good goals for us, but we haven't seen that clear-cut convincing transition yet."
