New season, and indeed a new formation. After discussion of implementing a 4-3-3 formation and moving away from the patented diamond formation, Real Salt Lake showcased a new look in its preseason friendly against the New England Revolution. It ended in a 2-1 loss on a rainy morning in Casa Grande, Ariz., at the Grande Sports Complex.

Last year's Eastern Conference Champions went up 2-0 thanks to goals from Charlie Davies (7th minute) and Sean Okoli (48th minute). RSL forward Sebastian Jaime pulled one back in the 63rd minute, but it wasn't enough.

RSL started the first half with a slew of newbies, club academy members and preseason invitees. However there was an entire line shift change to start the second half as the likes of Kyle Beckerman, Chris Schuler, Tony Beltran, Luke Mulholland and other first-teamers faced a 1-0 deficit.

"The first group we had a very young team out there – one player with MLS experience.  But I was really pleased with their shape," Coach Jeff Cassar told RSL communications.  "Their goal came from a poor giveaway in a really bad area and they made us pay for it.  I thought our shape was good and we had some bright ideas in the attack."

Posted above are the highlights of today's match from RSL video wizard Nick Lamping.
