Prep football: Corner Canyon coach Don Eck resigns; Jordan coach Eric Kjar linked as possible replacement

Don Eck, the only football coach in Corner Canyon history, has resigned, The Tribune learned on Thursday.

"Probably a lot of reasons, but I just needed to move on," Eck said when asked what prompted the decision. "It was mutual."

Eck, who said he plans on pursuing coaching opportunities elsewhere, finished 28-19 overall in four seasons since the Draper-based program's inception in 2013, including leading the Chargers to a 12-1 record a Class 4A semifinal appearance in only his second season.

He was 11-1 in Region 7 play in his first two years. However, Corner Canyon finished 4-8 in 2014 (eliminated in quarterfinals) and 6-5 this season (Region 7 play-in game).

"I loved it. Great community, great kids. I thought we had a couple great teams.," Eck said. "We kind of underachieved this year, but beat some really good teams. We just lost to teams we shouldn't."

The search for a replacement candidate just started, but one marquee name has been attached to the opening already: Jordan coach Eric Kjar.

Kjar is 69-29 in his eight seasons at Jordan, including leading the Beetdiggers to the 2012 Class 5A state championship, and is known as the orchestrator to some of the most prolific offenses in state history.

Kjar said he just heard of the opening and that he has not applied or been contacted, but would consider the job.

"I definitely would have to think about it," Kjar. "That is an interesting one. I don't know. I don't really think about some of the jobs [that open each year], but that's a pretty good one."
