Well you simply don't see that every day.

Hurricane softball pitcher Savannah Garner accomplished the dream of every pitcher at any level by not allowing a single hit. However, usually after finishing with a no-hitter, pitchers are celebrating the win, too.

Not Garner.

The Tigers' ace was stripped of that luxury because Pine View pitcher Addie Horspool was throwing flames of her own, as chronicled by Patrick Carr's report for The Spectrum.

Horspool allowed her first hit in the seventh, but escaped the inning unscathed, forcing an extra frame where the Panthers eventually earned the victory on an errant pitch.

Garner finished with eight strikeouts and four walks. Horspool fanned 11 batters and walked two.

Pine View tallied zero hits, zero errors, one run, and one win.

Midweek Review

Spring sports are moving right along, and already in the fifth week of the season. The quality of the picture is crystallizing now that region play has started.

The strongest development on Tuesday was Herriman (6-6) softball. The Mustangs, who started 3-6 after slogging through a six-game losing streak, registered a massive Region 4 win against top-ranked Riverton (9-4). Herriman opened a deadlocked game with six runs in the sixth inning to pull into a two-way tie for first place with Lehi.

The Pioneers (9-5) defeated Herriman in two games in the Class 5A championship last year. The rematch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on April 14 at Lehi.

Speaking of Riverton: The baseball team defeated Westlake (2-8), 27-16, in six innings. The two teams combined for 38 hits. The Silverwolves (5-5) logged three five-run innings, with six runs in the second, nine in the third, and five in the sixth.

Switching the conversation to baseball, there are several critical series this week. Second-ranked Pleasant Grove (8-2) took the first game against No. 4 American Fork, 3-1, at home on Tuesday. The series resumes Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. at American Fork (8-3) before returning to the Vikings' home field on Friday.

North Sevier (11-1) got the upper hand in the first battle of the top-ranked teams in the 2A classification. The No. 1-ranked Wolves knocked off No. 2 Grand (8-3), 4-0. Pitcher Fisher Andersen retired 10 batters in a one-run shoutout performance.

And then there were seven

In the three spring sports, only seven teams remain perfect. Timpanogos (9-0) and Murray (7-0) in baseball; Bountiful (7-0) and Alta (6-0) in softball; and Bingham (5-0), Juan Diego (7-0) and Wasatch (4-0) in boys' soccer.

Games to watch on Wednesday

Layton Christian (5-1 at South Summit (7-1), boys' soccer, at 4 p.m.

Tooele (6-2) at Taylorsville (4-2), softball, at 3:30 p.m.

Pleasant Grove at American Fork, baseball, at 3:30 p.m.

Spanish Fork (3-7) at Juan Diego (7-2), baseball, at 3:30 p.m.
