Former Weber State assistant basketball coach Tim Gardner is returning to the school where he established himself as a basketball player to be the head coach.

Judge Memorial announced Monday that Gardner will replace Dan Del Porto who recently resigned after back-to-back 4-19 seasons. Del Porto had been head coach at Judge since 2009 and was a long-time assistant to former coach Jim Yerkovich.

Gardner, who graduated from Judge in 1995 after playing basketball as a three-year starter, spent the last six seasons at Weber State.

After playing college basketball at the University of Puget Sound in Washington, Gardner was the first boys basketball coach at Juan Diego Catholic High School when it opened in 1999.

He coached the Soaring Eagle for seven years, winning four region championships and the 2004 state title in 2004.

He then joined Randy Rahe at Weber State as an assistant for six years, where he, helped the Wildcats win three Big Sky Conference titles, before leaving in 2012.

"It is really special to be coming back to Judge Memorial as head boys' basketball coach," Gardner said in a release from Judge. "The school and basketball program have a great tradition of excellence."

Judge principal Patrick Lambert called Gardner a fierce competitor and transformative coach.

"Coach Gardner brings experience, enthusiasm and a competitive drive to our boys' basketball program.," said Judge athletic director Brett Allen. "Our student-athletes will benefit from his passion for and love of the game, along with his discipline and work ethic."
