Russ Beck, the head coach of Western Nebraska Community College, is leaving college and has accepted the head basketball position at Mountain Crest, The Tribune learned on Friday morning.

"I am excited to lead the Mustangs and [I] am thrilled about the opportunity to grow the Mountain Crest program and for my family to settle down in Cache Valley," Beck wrote in an e-mail.

Beck coached Western Nebraska CC for seven seasons, registering an overall record of 124-100. Beck also has experience as an assistant for Dixie State, Salt Lake Community College, College of Southern Idaho and Southern Utah University.

After graduating from American Fork, Beck obtained his associate's degree from Dixie State, his bachelor's degree at Southern Utah and his master's degree from Adams State College, according to the Western Nebraska website.

"Ultimately the reason to leave college coaching came down to being closer to family and allowing my children the opportunity to get to spend precious time with our extended family. And for myself to be able to spend more time with my wife and kids," Beck wrote.

Beck replaces Graydon Buchmiller, who accepted the job at the neighboring Ridgeline High, which is set to open next year.
