Sione Lund, a Class of 2017 four-star prospect committed to play football for Stanford, is transferring to Waterford — a private school providing a liberal arts and college preparatory education.

Waterford, which competes in the 2A classification, does not have a football program, which allows Lund to continue playing for the Bengals next year. The transfer was motivated by academics. According to Utah High School Activities bylaws, students attending alternative high schools are eligible only at the public high school in whose attendance area the student's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) resides or at the public school from which the student withdrew for the purpose of attending the alternative high school.

"To get ready for Stanford," Lund said when asked what influenced the decision. "That's my main goal — why I want to go [to Waterford] — to help me educationally. I'm going to play ball at Brighton, of course."

Lund said he still is "thinking about" not playing football for Brighton, too. "That's was a huge question, but as of right now — I'm going to play for Brighton."

Lund was named to the All-Tribune team this year as a linebacker after finishing his junior season with 123 tackles (11.2 per-game average) and five sacks. He was also honored as a first-team All-State running back from coaches' votes after rushing for 1,184 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Lund maintains offers from Arizona State, BYU, California, Colorado, Michigan, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Utah, Vanderbilt, Washington and Washington State in addition to the Cardinal, according to Rivals.
