Mountain View coach Louis Wong will be the next coach at Westlake, The Tribune has learned.

Attempts by the Tribune to reach Wong for comment were unsuccessful, but several sources close to the situation confirmed the hire. Wong is expected to be introduced to the current sophomores and juniors in the program at 1:45 p.m. today.

Wong was one of the most successful coaches in the state while coaching at Timpview. He led the Thunderbirds to four consecutive state championships from 2006-09 and captured seven region titles in each of his seven years at the school before resigning as part of a settlement with the Provo School District in 2012 following questions regarding financial situations with boosters. He was 77-10 at Timpview.

Success did not follow Wong to Mountain View. The Bruins were collectively 3-17 in the two seasons under Wong, but were hampered drastically with low participation numbers.

The Thunder finished 5-5 this season, and did not qualify for the postseason, but the program is not without talent. Four-star athlete Chaz Ah You is back again next season, along with quarterback Saia Taufatofua, who threw for 1,226 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Leading rusher Alema Te'o and several defensive standouts, including Kawika Saaga, who led the team with 5.5 sacks, return in 2016, as well.
