Is this the deepest season in the 5A classification in years? The top five in The Tribune's power rankings all won convincingly. Bingham returned to its winning ways with its 14th consecutive victory against West Jordan. Brighton continued to make a living winning ugly games. The Bengals might not be the second best program in the state, which they've been ranked at the start of the year, but penalizing for winning feels extreme. Sky View delivered another well-rounded performance against Weber. Jordan destroyed Taylorsville to the tune of 62-18. If the Beetdiggers can hold opponents under 20 points consistently — there might not another program capable of beating them this season. Lone Peak, which might have the best resume in the state at this juncture, rocked Pleasant Grove.

Davis is undefeated and hasn't sniffed the power rankings this season. Same story with Mountain Crest, which survived a thriller against Fremont — a team which ahs two losses against top-tier programs. Herriman and American Fork both fell victim against top-ranked teams, too, but counting out either team seems comical. Both are legitimate threats.

We haven't even mentioned Hunter or Syracuse. Throw in a much-improved Lehi team and Westlake, which has continued to improve as the season has progressed, and we're left with the biggest cluster in years.

Who is going to win the 5A title this season?

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

— Dixie's Zak Harrah threw for 344 yards and six touchdowns in the win against Canyon View.

— Hillcrest's Booker McGuire rushed for 129 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Huskies to their first win of the year against Timpanogos.

Chase Bauerle threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns while adding another score with his feet in Syracuse's win against West.

Alec Evans accounted for 192 yards of total offense with three touchdowns in Jordan's win against Taylorsville.

— Lone Peak quarterback Talmage Gunther completed 15 of 20 passes for 181 yards and four touchdowns and scampered for 70 yards on 11 carries in the win against Pleasant Grove

Carson Terrell hauled in eight receptions for 157 yards and two touchdowns in Lehi's win against Riverton

— Manti's Mac Stevens and Kayden Stevenson combined 298 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in the win against Emery.

PROVING US WRONG

Well this is embarrassing. Tom Wharton limped to a 2-5 record this week in pick 'em. And he won the week. Both Brennan Smith and myself went 1-6 this week, with our only correct prediction coming at the hands of Dixie, which means I owe a curtsey to Wasatch (dominated Skyline), Beaver (knocked off North Summit), Highland (topped Bountiful in overtime), Tooele (easily beat Stansbury), Mountain Crest (held off Fremont) and Springville (won one-point decision against Maple Mountain).

Six. That's an ugly number. Six programs proved me wrong. That simply cannot continue.
