Roy won twice on Friday night. The Royals defeated Desert Hills 24-14 to earn their first win of the season (1-1 after bye in first week), but the true victory was the gesture they displayed for Thunder star Nephi Sewell, who suffered a potentially career-ending neck injury in the opening week of the season. The Desert Hills athletics' Twitter account announced Roy raised money for the Sewell family and delivered the funds on Friday.

The Thunder said it perfectly: "Much Respect, Roy."

THE GAMBLE

The game hinged on a two-point conversion with less than a minute in regulation. Cedar scored on a desperation fourth-and-20 heave with 37 seconds remaining to pull within one point of crosstown rival Canyon View. The Reds decided to go for the win, but the attempt proved unsuccessful — propelling the Falcons to 3-0 and the first win against Cedar in a decade.

UNSCATHED

After three weeks of the regular season, 19 programs remain undefeated. The logjam of Class 5A is evident, with Sky View, Mountain Crest, Davis, Layton, Brighton, Jordan and Lone Peak all still without a loss, and Bingham would likely be in the same conversation if not for playing No. 1-ranked Bishop Gorman. Kearns improved to 3-0 for the first time in 22 years, while Provo, Maple Mountain and Springville round out the Class 4A perfection. The Golden Eagles and Red Devils play this upcoming Friday. Stansbury and Pine View are the only Class 3AA programs without a loss, while Juan Diego, Canyon View and Juab claim the fame in Class 3A. South Summit, Diamond Ranch and Monument Valley round out the rest of the state's perfect records.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES

Lehi's Cammon Cooper completed 20 of 23 passes for 304 yards and five touchdowns in a win against Granger.

Summit Academy's Justin Miller threw for 269 yards and four touchdowns in a 63-6 rout of South Sevier.

Layton's Tayler Katoa completed 15 of 21 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown, and added 109 more yards and three scores with his feet in the win against Northridge.

Zach Hoffman kept the pulse of Juan Diego's undefeated season alive by blocking a field goal to push the Eagle past Snow Canyon in double overtime.

James Wilson caught six balls for 152 yards and two touchdowns in Maple Mountain's win against North Sanpete.

West Jordan's Dylan Krans accounted for five touchdowns — three through the air and two on the ground — in the Jaguars' upset blowout against Skyline.

Colton Durrant finished with 18 tackles and four quarterback hurries in Sky View's win against Highland.

Davis' Connor Taylor continued his terror on defense, recording 18 tackles in the win agaisnt Olympus to inflate his season total to 45 takedowns in three games.

PROVING US WRONG

I say proving "us" wrong this week, but that isn't entirely accurate. For the second consecutive Friday night, I finished 6-1 in pick 'em. I selected Tooele to remain undefeated and knock off Murray in an upset, and the Spartans: You proved me wrong. Brennan Smith rebounded admirably this week, posting a 6-1 record, with his lone blunder being Pleasant Grove. Jordan won that game, 28-21. Now, back to the first sentence of this tidbit. Tom Wharton earned the first perfect 7-0 record of the season. He owes no crow.
