Alta, Hillcrest and Layton Christian Academy all have new girls basketball coaches.

Izzy Gustafson will be the new Alta coach, Shannon Hurst is taking over at Hillcrest and David Hammer will be leading Layton Christian.

Gustafson, a Jordan High graduate, is earning a master's of education in coaching education from Ohio State University. She received her B.S. from Utah Valley.

"I am very excited," she said, adding that she has already scheduled open gym times, parents meetings, team-building exercises and summer camps. "We want to build on the strength and standards that are already there and really take it to the next level."

She is a former assistant at Jordan High who has being teaching and coaching at John F. Kennedy Junior High.

Hurst is a former Snow College and Granite High player wh has been Hillcrest's junior varsity coach the past four seasons. She plans to meet soon with parents and players.

"I am so excited," she said. "I know the talent we have. We have a young team, so I am excited to have them for a few more years."

Hurst graduated from Utah State in 2011 and teaches physical education and health at Hillcrest.

Hammer is a graduate of East High School, Salt Lake Community College and Menlo College. He has coaching experience at Menlo College, East, Westminster and Utah State University Eastern.

He is currently a coach with the Salt Lake Metro basketball program.
