Katie Hansien, a freshman skier attending Salt Lake City's Rowmark Academy, won the slalom event at the U16 Nationals in Sugarloaf, Maine, recently.

The budding star crashed in the Super-G and giant slalom races, but skied flawlessly in both runs of the slalom to win overall by a second, which is a large margin in ski racing. She has dominated the Intermountain U16 circuit all season.

Sophomore Sofia Yubero finished third after one slalom run, only to go off course near the finish of the second run. Yubero placed fifth in the Super G.

"Both girls really charged in all three races," said Rowmark program and head U16 coach Todd Brickson. "All the best U16s in the country were here, so they had to put it on the line and they did."
