While much of Utah's high school athletic attention is focussed on basketball tournaments, some athletes are already preparing for spring seasons.

That was the case this past weekend as several Utah prep stars performed well in the Simplot Games indoor track and field championships at Idaho State in Pocatello.

More than 2,000 athletes from the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia participated in the 37th annual event.

According to event organizers, Utah athletes traditionally comprise the largest contingent of athletes from any state. This year, Utah secured the most qualifying positions in the finals, won four events and gathered dozens more medals.

Utah first place winners included:

— Morgan senior Britten Duerden, who won the girls' long jump for the second consecutive year with a jump of 5-foot-9.

— Herriman senior Amarissa Hawker who won the girls' shot put title with a toss of 45-feet, 2.25 inches.

— The Davis Track Club boys captured the 4x800 meter relay, while the girls won the 1,600-meter spring relay.
