The latest Gallup Poll says 16 percent of the American public finds polygamy "Morally acceptable."

If that sounds low, consider this: The figure was 5 percent in 2006 and 14 percent just last year.

That's not necessarily a tidal wave, but the needle is moving.

Enter your assumption here about what's behind the change. Television shows showing polygamous families? Same-sex marriage support seeping into the polygamy debate? The rise of people who think government should leave everyone alone?

Or, as the entire Gallup Poll suggests, maybe it's just the lessening of that good, old moral judgment.

Whatever the answer, the polygamists have a long way to go. The poll says 81 percent of respondents still find polygamy "Morally wrong."
