Stanford's search for quarterback Kevin Hogan's replacement may continue in September. Kellen Chryst and Ryan Burns "have done well, but at the same time, both guys need to ramp it up," coach David Shaw said this week during the Pac-12 coaches' spring media teleconference. "I'd anticipate both guys playing early in the year to continue the evaluation process." Stanford opens the season Sept. 2 vs. Kansas State. The Cardinal miss Utah again in the Pac-12's schedule rotation.  Shaw mentioned offensive guard Brandon Fanaika of Pleasant Grove as a key lineman, part of the Cardinal's traditional position of strength. He also addressed a question about how the 2015 conference championship team loosened up and played confidently in the second half of the season. The players "started to enjoy themselves, and you saw us play with emotion and energy and passion, but still play physical and tough and hard-nosed," Shaw said. "It can't be frivilous. We can't have a lot of fun if we're not playing well." As for promoting the Stanford brand of football nationally, Shaw said, "We still have a lot to prove. … We have to remind [recruits] that we're not a bunch of elitists and rich kids." – Kurt Kragthorpe
