Other than the part about Stanford nearly doubling my predicted scoring total (in three quarters), I was right in saying that quarterback Kevin Hogan would become 5-0 lifetime against UCLA. However, I may not have mentioned that Christian McCaffrey would break Stanford's rushing record with 243 yards (in three quarters). The Cardinal's 56-35 victory was an overwhelming performance that further separates themselves in the Pac-12 North and also distinguishes Utah and Arizona State in the South. On to Saturday's games: Oregon State at Washington State, 2 p.m. MDT, Pac-12 Networks The best thing that can be said about coach Gary Andersen's first season at Oregon State is the Beavers are getting to play a lot of day games. They're becoming a fixture in the Pac-12 Networks' Saturday afternoon time slot, after the bigger games have been selected. The Beavers realistically have two chances to win a conference game in 2015, this week in Pullman and next week at home against Colorado. This game suddenly looks much tougher after WSU's overtime victory at Oregon last week – coupled with OSU's poor performance against Arizona. This is a meeting of former Logan residents, with Andersen facing Cougar quarterback Luke Falk, who passed for 505 yards at Oregon. Can he hit 1,000 yards against the two Oregon schools in consecutive weeks? Washington State 35, Oregon State 21.  USC at Notre Dame, 5:30 p.m. MDT, NBC Here's a theme you're going to hear a lot in the coming weeks: USC's opponent is facing a fourth different Trojan coach in four seasons. That's because USC has its second interim coach in three seasons. Clay Helton makes his debut in a high-profile game, with another one to come next week when the Trojans host Utah. The good news for USC is that quarterback Cody Kessler can't possibly play as poorly as he did in last week's 17-12 loss to Washington, which preceded the firing of coach Steve Sarkisian. The dismissal was for non-football reasons, but Sark's closing act was not a good one. Notre Dame's secondary is vulnerable, but it would be asking a lot of the Trojans to go into South Bend under this week's circumstances and put together a complete performance. Notre Dame 28, USC 24.  Arizona at Colorado, 7 p.m. MDT, Fox Sports 1 I've been saying for months that a good team is going to finish fifth in the Pac-12 South. Arizona now looks like that team. The division's defending champions have been disappointing, but they recovered in a 44-7 win over Oregon State last week and should continue their upswing in Boulder. Arizona 35, Colorado 28.  Arizona State at Utah, 8 p.m. MDT, ESPN There's some danger in relying too much on past results, but the history of this series in Utah's Pac-12 era is impossible to ignore. The numbers to remember: 19 and 199. In the last four meetings, Utah has failed to top 19 points or 199 passing yards. Devontae Booker needed 37 carries to gain 146 yards in a 19-16 overtime loss to ASU last season. Part of the problem was Utah's passing struggles, with Travis Wilson throwing for 57 yards. This time, Wilson should be good enough to take some pressure off Booker. Utah 27, Arizona State 21.  Oregon at Washington, 8:30 p.m. MDT, ESPN2 In September, Oregon and Oregon State visited Michigan and Michigan State on the same day. This weekend, the Ducks and Beavers are playing at Washington and Washington State. Unfortunately for ambitious media members who took in a doubleheader in Michigan, Pullman and Seattle are much farther apart than Ann Arbor and East Lansing. In any case, this late-night matchup should be a good one. Washington's defense was outstanding against USC, although that was more true against the pass than against the run. Oregon is struggling in the passing game, but Royce Freeman ran for 246 yards in last week's loss to Washington State. Could you imagine Oregon failing to achieve bowl eligibility? That could become an issue if the Ducks fall to 3-4 with a loss in Seattle. And that's crazy, isn't it? Oregon 35, Washington 31.  – Kurt Kragthorpe
