The Utah Jazz's summer league tips off Monday night with rookie Jahlil Okafor and the Philadelphia 76ers taking on the San Antonio Spurs at 5 p.m. The Boston Celtics will take on the Jazz in the second half of the doubler header starting at 7 p.m.

Here are four questions I have going into the week:

1. Will we see Trey Lyles in action?

The rookie out of Kentucky missed his third straight practice of the summer on Sunday, as he and the Jazz find themselves in a strange, contractual limbo.

General manager Dennis Lindsey says the two sides still have to work out some minor details on Lyles' deal, but insists the major hold-up here is the Utah front office's desire to maintain maximum cap flexibility. The difference between Lyles cap hold now and when he ultimately signs a deal for 120 percent of the rookie scale is about $375,000. That seems like a rather insignificant amount give the Jazz's cap space and how quiet they have been in free agency. Is there some signing or trade on the horizon for Utah?

The hold up could be some quibbling over Lyles' bonuses. It might also be worth keep in mind that as soon as Lyles signs his deal, the Jazz would have to wait 30 days to include him in a trade.

At any rate, Lyles won't suit up for summer league until after he's put pen to paper and finalized his deal.

2. Can Dante Exum dominate?

There were all sorts of ups and downs in the 19-year-old's rookie campaign. Exum proved himself to be a good defender, especially for his age and experience level. But he also looked extremely timid at times with the ball, failing to use his size and speed to attack the basket.

With a year of experience under his belt, Exum is expected to take a leap forward during his sophomore campaign. By all accounts, Exum has bulked up, improved his shooting and wants to showcase himself as a leader this summer.

3. What wrinkles will we see?

Take a quick glance at the Jazz's summer roster and you'll notice a lack of traditional centers. That's apparently by design.

"Jack Cooley is a center with how we play," Lindsey said. "Even though he may not be 7-2, with the level of physicality [he has] he'll be able to control the glass, we feel like. And we're looking at some ideas on how we want to play both now and going forward. The roster is set up that way a little bit."

The Jazz coaches want to use the summer league to experiment a little bit, and will try some different looks with their flow offense.

"We're actually playing five guys out to have the floor spaced," said forward Grant Jerrett, who will play some center this summer. "Doing that this summer is going to benefit each player."

4. Can someone get an edge in point guard battle?

The Jazz's talks with Brazilian guard Raul Neto are ongoing. In the meantime, Bryce Cotton and rookie Olivier Hanlan are trying to use the summer to get a head start on the battle for the third point guard spot.

Cotton impressed the Jazz enough last year to earn a multi-year deal, but his contract is not guaranteed.

Hanlan, meanwhile, is quickly adjusting to the Jazz's system.

"I think Oliver's made some big jumps," assistant coach Alex Jensen said Sunday. "He's smart. Just offensively and defensively getting comfortable — I think he's been, not a surprise, but encouraging how far he's come in two days."

The Big Dawg Antoine Carr is back in Salt Lake City. As part of the franchise's alumni program, the former Jazzman will host some youth clinics this week with Mehmet Okur.

The two will also sign autographs at ESA on Monday and Tuesday on the concourse outside the Fanzz store from 5:30 until 7 p.m.

I had a chance to catch up with Carr this weekend.

Here's our conversation:

Forward Jeremy Evans has reportedly signed a two-year deal with the Dallas Mavericks for the league minimum.

"We haven't closed the door" on a return to Utah, agent Mark Bartelstein told The Tribune this week, but added that the former Slam Dunk champ is exploring his options in free agency.

On Sunday, ESPN reported the high flying Evans was headed to Dallas.

The 27-year-old Evans was a second-round pick by the Jazz in 2010. But after being a regular rotation player two seasons ago for coach Tyrone Corbin, Evans saw his minutes and role dramatically reduced last season under new coach Quin Snyder.

"If I'm here, I'm going to be so happy," Evans said during his exit interview in April. "I feel like this is my home. If not, I know it's still going to be a bright future and wish everybody the best."

Over five seasons with the Jazz, Evans averaged 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 219 appearances.

Second-year forward Rodney Hood was held out of practice for a second straight day Sunday because of a sore left shoulder. The injury is a day-to-day issue.

"I don't think it's too bad," Jensen said. "I would rather see him play in the game than practice right now."
