Chicago • The Utah Jazz filled their open roster spot by signing guard Elliot Williams to a 10-day contract Wednesday, a day after waiving the injured Patrick Christopher.

Williams, a 6-foot-5 guard who was averaging 21.3 points and 7.7 assists a game for the D-League Santa Cruz Warriors, was en route to Chicago on Wednesday morning and was expected to join up with the team ahead of the 6 p.m. MT tipoff against the Bulls.

"I think he's got some length, a defensive mindset," Jazz coach Quin Sndyer said. "He's able to guard a couple positions, defend the ball. I think, right now, to have someone that can come in and provide us some depth is pretty much essential."

Williams, 25, is a former first round pick of the Portland Trail Blazers, but injuries have set him back multiple times.

Williams played 67 games with the Philadelphia 76ers last season and averaged six points and two rebounds a game.

He is the Jazz's second D-League call-up in less than a week (joining Elijah Millsap on the roster), and the team's third of the season.

"It's a challenge any time you're down guys," Snyder said. "Having to integrate new players is always a unique thing."

Christopher was making his first NBA start when he dislocated his right knee cap six minutes into the game against Atlanta. He is expected to be out for 6-8 weeks.

"Our thoughts and prayers have been with him for a little while," Snyder said. "He'll have a chance to get better. That's just a tough break that that happened to him. He put himself in a great position with all the work that he's done and I'm sure he'll approach his rehab the same way and get back and get better."

Injury update

Point guard Trey Burke should be back in the lineup Wednesday night after missing a game with strep throat. Forward Enes Kanter's sprained right ankle will keep him out of action for another night.
