Atlanta • DeMarre Carroll was looking forward to a chance to square off against his old team and his old assistant coach tonight, but a groin injury will keep the former Jazz man out of the lineup for the Hawks.

"It's one of those games that I really want to go out there," Carroll said after his team's shootaround Wednesday morning. "Especially to go against Quin. Make him a little mad."

New Jazz coach Quin Snyder spent last season as an assistant in Atlanta, and Carroll credits him with elevating his game.

"I'm happy for him. I'm happy he's in a good place," said Carroll, who spent part of the 2011-12 and all of the 2012-13 season with the Jazz, is averaging 12 points and 6.4 rebounds a game early in his second year in Atlanta.

The hard-nosed forward injured his groin late in the Hawks' last game against the New York Knicks.

"It's one of those plays. I know who did it and what they did," he said. "I don't really want to elaborate on it. I'm just trying to get better."

The Hawks will start Thabo Sefolosha in Carroll's place.

The Jazz, meanwhile, will once again be without rookie forward Rodney Hood. Tonight will be the third straight game he has missed because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot.

Atlanta's Mike Scott (low back contusion) is also out. Hawks rookie Adreian Payne (left plantar fasciitis) is listed as probable. If he plays, it would be his NBA debut.

Tipoff is set for shortly after 5:30 p.m., and the game will be televised on ROOT Sports.
