Dallas • Before tipoff tonight at the American Airlines Center, Quin Snyder was smiling off a steady onslaught of birthday wishes. The Jazz coach turned 48 today.

But even then Snyder knew he could be in for a tough night.

"They didn't do us any favors with the schedule on my birthday," he said.

This one was never going to be easy: the back end of a back-to-back, against a team that believes it can contend for a championship this year.

The Mavericks started on an 18-8 run and never trailed once as they beat up on a young Jazz team, 120-102.

Utah will get a chance to see these guys again soon, with the roles reversed in some ways.

"We have to play these guys again a week from tonight in Utah, on the second night of a back-to-back," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "And it's always a meat grinder when you play them because they play so hard."

• This was the Jazz's sixth straight loss to the Mavs.

• Carlisle on his team's offensive performance tonight: "I thought we spaced the floor well and kept the pace. Because of that we had room to attack and make plays. Utah is a hard team to play, and even when the score is an uneven score, they just kept coming at us and coming at us. I thought we did a good job of just continuing to maintain a level of competitiveness against them."

• Hayward vs. Parsons: 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting, six assists and four rebounds for the Jazz man; 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting, seven rebounds and two assists for the new Maverick.

• Snyder has said he wants Hayward to be aggressive. How'd the swingman think he did tonight?

"I mean, it's one of those things where I should probably be more aggressive in certain situations, but my game is a lot of taking what the defense gives me. If there are two guys on me, I'm going to find the open man. I got to be able to read situations better and make better decisions for sure," he said.

• Tough shooting night for rookie Rodney Hood, who went 0 for 7.

• Joe Ingles was active again tonight and played 11 minutes. Snyder mentioned his passing and the Aussie had a couple good looks tonight, finishing with two assists.

• Enes Kanter went 1 for 2 from beyond the arc. The stretch-Kanter storyline might have been somewhat overblown. At the same time, Trevor Booker's 3-point shooting was perhaps downplayed a little too much. The forward hit 3 of them tonight. In his first four years in the NBA, he'd only ever made one.

• Kanter (19:37) and Booker (18:54), meanwhile, played similar minutes.

Booker's defensive effort has got to be a factor in that.

"I'm just trying to come in and show some veteran leadership," Booker said of his performances in the first two games . "I have some experience in the league, so I've been through it. I think that's helping me so far. I'm just trying to help the young guys out and bring a spark to the team. Hopefully we'll see it next game."
