About the hike • The beginning of the Jumpoff Canyon trail feels a bit awkward, as you weave your way on a dirt path that cuts behind residents' fenced yards.

But after a few minutes, hikers will be past the residential area and hiking what is a quintessential Bonneville Shoreline trail — little shade and lots of brush and shrubs. The trail has plenty of signage, but it still tends to get confusing — do we take Jump-off Canyon South? North? North Alternate?

We followed the easy North trail for about a mile before we came to a clearing, which offered a spectacular view of the valley below. We erred at this point by turning around and following the South trail signs. It would have been better to take the trail marked Bonneville Shoreline heading south, where hikers would meet up with the Jumpoff Canyon trail again in a true loop.

Not only was navigating this trail a little confusing, the name is also baffling: We saw nothing to jump off of, and it didn't resemble a canyon.

Regardless, the hike was a fairly easy stroll that offered rewarding views of the valley below. It will likely be too exposed and hot in the summer, so hit this trail now or in the fall.
