Nordic Valley will host a race for an increasingly popular winter-style type of mountain biking Saturday.

Frosty's Bike Race Series will kick off its season with a downhill and a cross country face. Competitors use fat bikes, which are heavy duty mountain bikes with wide wheels that provide extra traction for riding in the snow.

In the downhill race, organizers say that riders take the ski lift to the top of the mountain and ride down. The cross country race is between six and 20 miles on snow trails, depending on the race category entered.

"We are thrilled to be returning to Nordic Valley for the fourth consecutive season," says Randal Gibb, director of the race series. "The scenery at Nordic Valley is unparalleled, and our participants can't get enough of the thrill of the downhill race. It's not every day you get to ride a bike down a groomed ski run at 40+ miles per hour!"

The bikes have become popular for the last six or seven years and Gubb has been organizing races for them since 2012.

After Nordic Valley, races are scheduled at Utah's Brian Head and Sundance resorts, Idaho's Sun Valley and Canada's Jasper National Park.
