The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is hosting a free Mountain Goat Watching event Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Rock Creek area northwest of Mountain Home in northwestern Utah.

The goats tend to migrate to areas of the South Slope of the UInta Mountains to ridges exposed to the sun where they can be viewed.

DWR biologist Randall Thacker said visitors to the Rock Creek Road can usually see mountain goats wintering in the canyon.

"Keeping the road open to the Stillwater Dam creates a unique viewing opportunity," he said.

Since the goats move around, biologists will have to wait until Saturday to determine exact viewing sites. Visitors should drive slowly up the Rock Creek Road until they see biologists.

Spotting scopes will be available. There will also be a site that includes displays and information about mountain goats. Biologists will also direct visitors to additional viewing areas.

"We'll have binoculars and spotting scopes for you to use," said Ron Stewart, DWR outreach manager, "but if you have your own viewing gear, please bring it."

Visitors should also bring warm clothing and a lunch.

If the weather is bad, the event will be cancelled. Call the DWR Vernal Office on Friday for an update. That number is 435-781-9453.
