The Wasatch Backcountry Alliance will offer an experimental free shuttle service to bring dispersed recreational users such as snowshoers, hikers and backcountry skiers into Little Cottonwood Canyon Saturday.
The goals of Wasatch Backcountry Alliance Shuttle Day are to collect participant feedback and to raise awareness of transportation and possible solutions that exist today to reduce traffic congestion in Little Cottonwood Canyon.
The group will provide free 12-passenger vans. Participants who want to use them must register at http://www.utahmountainbikeshuttle.com.
Shuttle pickup will occur at the Smiths/Shopko Parking lot at 2039 E. 9400 South. There will be stops at Tanners, White Pine, Our Late of the Snows and Grizzly Gulch (the Summer Road). Each stop will see a van approximately every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a final sweeper shuttle hitting each stop at around 5 p.m.
The idea behind the shuttle is to reduce traffic congestion in the canyon.
"Wasatch Backcountry Alliance has participated in countless discussions about reducing traffic congestion in the Cottonwood Canyons, said Jamie Kent, president of Wasatch Backcountry Alliance. "we hope to raise awareness of the growing problem, and to collect data from our members who use a shuttle as an alternative to driving. The Shuttle Day event is about taking action to learn more both about the problem and potential solutions."
